North Korea has launched its first ever beer festival.

The secretive state 's own celebration of all things alcoholic began in the capital where guests - with thirsty ale aficionados lining up for a guzzle.

Star of the show was Taedonggang Beer - a lager named after the Taedong River which flows through the centre of the city.

A total of seven tipples were on tap at the vent, which took place by the side of the waterway. Approximately five hundred special guests were allowed in earlier today to try the beer for free for the first two hours.

The public were later allowed in, to enjoy drinks served up by barmaids in blue and white uniforms. One apparently well-refreshed beer enthusiast said: "It's really refreshing, it's really tasty, it's got just a little bit of sweetness. "I think there's no other beer in the world like our Taedonggang Beer," he added.

The festival ran for 20 days.
